Facebook’s efforts started in 2013. At present, the company has signed more than 3000 trillion watts of solar and wind energy purchase agreements. Furthermore, over the past 12 months, Facebook has purchased 2500 megawatts of renewable energy.
Facebook says it has successfully achieved its 2015 objective of supporting 50% of its facilities with renewable energy by 2018. Last year, their use of renewable energy reached 51%. Facebook also pointed out that one of the reasons for decreasing greenhouse gas emissions was to support the Paris Agreement. Another positive effect of this action, is that investing in renewable energy also creates employment opportunities for renewable energy producers.
Apart from Facebook, Samsung said in June that it will use 100% renewable energy in all its factories, offices and operating facilities in the United States, Europe and China by 2020. At the moment, Google and Apple are 100% using renewable energy. Google achieved this goal last year, and Apple did in April of this year.
